RESILIENCE RELAY FEATURED ATHLETE: WILLIAM
Achilles Resilience Relay 2021
WILLIAM ALVAREZ
United States Army Sergeant (Retired) William Alvarez. William lives in NYC and has been a member of Achilles for a decade, however he started to become much more active with the Achilles Freedom Team after a visit to the Achilles office one afternoon. (We encourage visitors!) A veteran of the Vietnam war, William has conquered more than 15 marathons and has many more to come! William frequents the Saturday handcycle workouts in Central Park, but before re-opening in September 2020, he was getting out as much as possible. “Riding as much as possible was helpful during the pandemic. The roads were empty. I had the entire street to myself to ride on. It was a unique experience to be able to ride in New York City, any time, any place, without worrying about traffic!” For the ARR, he is looking forward to, “improving my skills and sharing this new and special event with my veteran friends.” As we begin to safely gather and come out of isolation, William reflects, “our country as a whole has lived through a great event this past year. I hope we have learned something from the experiences. This may give others a bit of insight as to what we veterans went through during and after the Vietnam war.” William is driven and kind and a treasured staple of the Achilles Freedom Team and Achilles NYC Chapter.
