Achilles International Houston Launches Kids Program with Fun Run

Achilles International Houston launched an Achilles Kids program on Saturday, May 7 with a fun run. For the first time ever, the in-person Achilles Kids program, which originated in New York City more than 25 years ago, will be offered in Houston. The chapter hosted a fun run kickoff to welcome youth with disabilities ages 2 to 21 to participate and make new friends. The event featured medals, refreshments and a raffle. Children completed as many or as little loops of the park as they wish.

“We’re thrilled to have a Team Achilles Kids program now in Houston! This program accepts children with all disabilities and provides them with the opportunity to be part of a community that can help them overcome obstacles and spread their wings,” said Gloria Suarez, Director of Achilles International Houston and athlete.

Over three million children in the U.S. live with a disability. Research suggests that physical activity levels are 4.5 times lower for youth with a disability. Physical activity is an important part of every child’s healthy development and can help improve quality of life, aerobic capacity, and functioning. The Achilles Kids program provides youth with disabilities the opportunity to exercise regularly, gain confidence through their successes, and have fun.

All with disabilities are welcome to join Achilles Houston. Advance RSVPs are strongly preferred. To learn more, contact Querine Hoogkamer at q.hoogkamer@achilleshouston.org.
