James Murphy joined Achilles as the Chapter Lead for Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (D.M.V.) in February 2025. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Health Science with a Minor in Biology from Norwich University, as well as a diploma from the Military College of Vermont. After graduating, he served in the Marine Corps, during which he sustained an injury and became a patient at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. During his time at Walter Reed, he had the unique opportunity to intern with the Adaptive Sports and Reconditioning Program, an occupational therapy initiative designed to help wounded, injured, and ill service members transition back to duty or civilian life. In this role, he served as the assistant instructor for both nutrition and boxing, mentored service members through the medical retirement process, and organized an Adaptive Sports Expo to connect service members and veterans with nonprofit organizations, including Achilles International.
As a disabled veteran who has personally benefited from nonprofit adaptive sports organizations, James has developed a deep respect and appreciation for their impact. His current athletic pursuits include jiu-jitsu, boxing, hockey, weightlifting, snowboarding, and rock climbing. Through his work with Achilles, he is committed to helping others discover their passions and transform their disabilities into abilities. He is honored to expand the reach and impact of the Achilles D.M.V. Chapter.
