Meet the 70-Year-Old Norway Runner Who is Blind and Deaf Racing His 98th Marathon in NYC

Arne Olav Løvik of Achilles Norway won’t stop until he has conquered 100 marathons! At 70-years-old, Arne has run 97 marathons, and will be one step closer to reaching his goal after competing in the 2022 TCS New York City Marathon (his fourth).

Arne, who is blind, deaf and has severe balance issues, first joined Achilles 10 years ago when he was looking to join a social group that shared a similar interest in physical activities. Find out what motivates Arne in the Q&A below.

What inspired you to set the goal of running 100 marathons?

“I set this goal to prove to myself and to others that my multiple disabilities are not a hindrance when it comes to achieving great goals in sports!”

How has Achilles impacted your life?

“Achilles has impacted my life in so many positive ways. I have been given the opportunity to participate in huge events such as the New York City Marathon, which I would never have been able to participate in due to the financial and logistical costs surrounding this event, if it had not been for the incredible support of Achilles.”

Why do you enjoy running?

“I have tried multiple different sporting activities in my life, which did not result in success. Once I finally started running, I found that it really gave me peace of mind and that it is a really great workout.”

What advice or message do you have for other athletes living with a disability?

“Keep doing physical activities. It is so important to stay active, as it strengthens the body and increases quality of life.”

Do you have a favorite saying or phrase that you say to yourself during marathons or long runs?

“Every time I run a marathon, I always like to say to myself before I start that this is something that I can and must finish.”

Do you have a favorite marathon course?

“The New York City Marathon and the Stavanger Marathon in Norway are my favorites. My personal best time was achieved at the Stavanger Marathon in Norway in 1984, with a time of 2:34:03.”
