Achilles Around the World Summer Recap: Sharing Hope

We congratulate the below chapters who recently hosted signature Achilles Hope & Possibility® races in their local communities including:

  • Achilles Canada

  • Achilles Nashville

  • Achilles New Jersey

  • Achilles Panama

Read additional highlights below of how Achilles chapters beat the heat and stayed active with their teammates.

U.S. Chapters

Arkansas

Achilles Arkansas participated  in the DoNot Stop 5K and the Kaundart 5K on August 24 in Springdale, AR.

Connecticut

Achilles Connecticut athletes, volunteers, family and friends held a social outing at the Connecticut Sun game celebrating  a win against the Phoenix Mercury. The team was spotted throughout the stadium on the jumbotron, met Sun star and former UConn player Olivia Nelson-Ododa, and wrapped up the game with an on-court “Go Achilles!”

The chapter also participated in the Community Vitality Celebration Event at The Cigna Group headquarters on September 4 to engage with employees, leadership, and military veterans of the Achilles Freedom Team. Retired Master Sergeant and Achilles Board Member Cedric King kicked off the one mile walk and six-mile ride with an inspirational speech about perseverance.

New York City

Achilles NYC hosted their annual TriAchilles training camp welcoming 51 athletes and volunteer guides from across New York City, Long Island and New Jersey. They learned how to bike, swim, and train together for multisport events at New Jersey City University.

They also welcomed athletes with disabilities from Pennsylvania and Connecticut who do not live near a chapter workout. For many of the racing wheelchair and handcycle athletes, this was their first time ever training for multisport events.

Utah

Achilles Utah athletes and chapter lead Ken Duke participated in the Salt to Saint Relay, an over 400 mile tandem bike journey, on August 20.

International Chapters

Mexico

Achilles Mexico members were invited to speak at the Official Preparatory School 2016 of Tecámac, State of Mexico about sport and safe spaces. Students participated in different workshops learning what it’s like to be an athlete with a disability and how important it is to have access to guides.

New Zealand

Achilles New Zealand athletes traveled across the country, including those training for the upcoming TCS New York City Marathon, to complete the Rotorua Marathon. The team enjoyed a special team dinner before the race, and celebrated with a barbeque after the event.
